Hampton, VA

An Old Waterfront City With Trees Close to the Water

Hampton is one of the oldest English-speaking communities in the country, and much of it is surrounded by water: the Chesapeake Bay on the east, the Hampton River and Back River cutting through the city, and creeks and marsh almost everywhere. Older neighborhoods like Wythe, Phoebus and the streets around downtown have big shade trees that were planted generations ago. Fox Hill and the areas near Grandview sit low, close to the marsh, with pines and hardwoods on wet ground.

Buckroe Beach is its own kind of job. The streets behind the beach and Buckroe Beach Park are packed with homes on small lots, and the trees there live with salt spray, sandy soil and steady wind off the Bay. Pines and oaks on the beach side often grow lopsided, leaning away from the water, with thin crowns and dead branches on the windward side. Those trees need a careful look before storm season, because the wind that shaped them is also what brings them down.

Across Hampton, the work is a mix of tight older lots where trees come down in sections, wooded backyards where pines lean over roofs and fences, and storm cleanup after the tropical systems and nor’easters that hit the lower Bay.

Local trees

Trees We See Around Hampton

Waterfront trees that deal with salt, wind and ground that stays wet after rain.

Loblolly pines

Tall pines in backyards and along the marsh edges. Old pines with dead tops or a growing lean near a house are the most common removal.

Willow and water oaks

Big street and yard oaks in older neighborhoods. Heavy limbs and decline from the top are common as they age.

Southern red oaks and live oaks

Southern red oaks grow in the older woods, and live oaks are planted in some yards near the water. Both need room and good structure.

Crape myrtles

In nearly every Hampton front yard. Thinning and shaping keeps them healthy; topping them every year does not.

Good to know

Hampton Notes: Flooding, Bay Buffers and City Trees

Large parts of Hampton are low and close to the water, and some streets flood during heavy rain and high tides. When the ground stays soaked, roots lose their grip. That is why so many trees in Hampton fail by tipping over at the root plate during storms that bring a lot of rain before the wind. After a storm, look for soil lifting on one side of a tree, a new lean or cracked ground, and keep people away until it is checked.

Hampton is a Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act locality. Land along the Bay, rivers, creeks and marsh can be inside a Resource Protection Area, where removing trees and other vegetation is restricted. Dead, diseased or dangerous trees can usually still come out, but check with the City of Hampton before cutting near the shoreline at Buckroe Beach, along Back River or anywhere close to the marsh.

Trees in the strip along a public street are generally the city's to manage, so report those to the City of Hampton. Homes near Fort Monroe, Langley Air Force Base or in a historic area like Phoebus can have extra rules or access limits, so we confirm the details at the estimate before planning the job.

Wet, sandy ground. When heavy rain soaks the soil before the wind arrives, shallow roots lose their grip and the whole tree can tip over at the base.
