MG Tree Service removes trees, grinds stumps and clears overgrown lots for homeowners in Mechanicsville and the eastern side of Hanover County. Most jobs here involve tall loblolly pines and hardwoods on wooded half-acre and acre lots, and we chip the brush and haul it away.
Mechanicsville, VA
A lot of Mechanicsville was built by carving subdivisions out of pine and hardwood forest. Drive down Pole Green Road, Atlee Road or Cold Harbor Road and you see the pattern: a house, a cleared lawn and then a wall of trees along the back and sides of the lot. Over twenty or thirty years those edge trees grow tall, lean toward the open space and end up over the deck, the shed or the roof.
That makes pine removal the most common job we see in Mechanicsville. Loblolly pines grow straight and tall, but once they lose their lower limbs they carry all their weight up top, and they are the trees that snap or uproot when a strong storm comes through. Hardwoods along the back of the lot, like oaks, tulip poplars and sweetgums, add their own share of dead limbs and leaning trunks.
The other common request is reclaiming yard space. Many Mechanicsville owners want the back strip of the lot cleared so they can extend the lawn, put up a fence or add a garden. That is lot clearing, often paired with stump grinding so the new ground can be seeded.

Local trees
Eastern Hanover sits on sandy, well-drained soil near the Chickahominy and Pamunkey rivers. These are the trees that grow best here, and the ones that cause the most calls.
Tall, fast and everywhere. The most common removal request, especially pines within reach of the house.
Spiky gumballs, aggressive roots and suckers in the lawn. Many owners want them gone.
White, red and willow oaks give great shade but drop heavy limbs as they age.
Very tall with brittle limbs, often found along the wooded back edge of lots.
What we do here
Good to know
Mechanicsville gets the same summer thunderstorms and tropical storm remnants as Richmond, and the open, wooded lots here catch the wind. After a big storm the calls are mostly about pines that snapped or uprooted. Having the tall pines near the house looked at before storm season is the cheapest way to avoid that.
For a normal tree on your own residential lot in Hanover County, a permit is usually not needed. Larger land clearing, areas near streams and wetlands, and HOA rules in some subdivisions can be different, so check with Hanover County or your HOA if the area is large or near water.
Most Mechanicsville lots are big enough to bring the chipper and truck close to the work, which keeps jobs efficient. Soft ground after heavy rain is the one thing that can push a heavy job back a day or two to protect the lawn.
