MG Tree Service removes and trims trees, clears overgrown lots and grinds stumps in Petersburg. Work here ranges from large old trees near historic homes in neighborhoods like Walnut Hill and Old Towne to clearing lots that have been left to grow over for years.
Petersburg, VA
Petersburg is one of the oldest cities in Virginia, sitting on the Appomattox River south of Richmond. Neighborhoods like Old Towne, Walnut Hill, High Street and Battersea have homes built over more than a century, and many of the trees around them are huge: old oaks, elms, maples and magnolias with wide canopies over roofs and porches.
Those trees are part of what makes the city beautiful, and they deserve careful work. Pruning to remove deadwood and lighten heavy limbs can often keep a historic tree going. When a tree has decayed too far, it has to come down in sections, with rope control, because there is almost never room to drop a big tree next to an old house.
Petersburg also has many properties where yards, vacant lots and fence lines have grown over with brush and volunteer trees. Clearing those, chipping the brush and grinding the stumps is a big part of what we do here.

What we do here
Good to know
Petersburg has several historic districts. If your home is inside one, check with the city before major changes to the property. For a normal tree on private residential land, a permit is usually not required, but it is worth asking when the tree is in a front yard in a historic area.
Trees between the sidewalk and the street are generally the city’s responsibility. Report problems with those to the City of Petersburg.
Properties along the Appomattox River and creeks can fall under Chesapeake Bay protection rules, which limit clearing near the water. If your lot is near the river, ask the city what applies before clearing.
